Bellarmine NCAA Tournament Controversy

The Bellarmine Knights emerged victorious in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament final on March 8, 2022, defeating Jacksonville 77-72. This win typically would have secured the Knights an automatic bid to the prestigious NCAA Tournament. However, due to an NCAA rule, Jacksonville State received the ASUN's coveted spot in the tournament instead.

Bellarmine, a Catholic institution in Louisville, is a newcomer to Division I, ascending from Division II in 2020, concurrent with its entry into the Atlantic Sun conference. The NCAA has a policy prohibiting teams from participating in postseason tournaments until they have completed their fifth season at the D-I level.
